How to earth up potatoes and leeks

How to earth up potatoes and leeks

Drawing soil up around the stems as the plant grows: keeps potatoes dark, blanches leeks and celery, steadies sprouts.

  1. Wait until there’s 15 to 20 cm of growth above the soil.

  2. Draw soil up round the stems with a hoe, from between the rows.

  3. Leave the top few leaves showing. Repeat every 2 to 3 weeks.
